Auto-stack and round-ups basics

Auto-stack and round-ups basics

Buying bitcoin doesn't have to be something you remember to do. Fold has two features that handle it in the background, and once they're set up, you genuinely don't have to think about them again. Here's what each one does and how they're different.

Auto-stack: a schedule you set once

Auto-stack is a recurring bitcoin purchase you control from the start and then leave alone.

  • Choose a schedule: weekly or monthly
  • Choose an amount you're comfortable with
  • Turn it on

From there, it runs on its own. You don't open the app to decide whether today's the day. The decision was already made when you set the schedule, and it just executes.

This is the closest thing to setting a recurring transfer. You pick the cadence and the number once, and Fold handles the rest, purchase after purchase, without a reminder or a prompt.

Round-ups: bitcoin from spending you're already doing

Round-ups don't run on a schedule. They run off your actual spending.

  • Every purchase made with your Fold card rounds up to the nearest dollar
  • The difference between what you spent and that rounded-up dollar goes toward bitcoin
  • A five dollar coffee that rounds up to six adds that extra dollar to your bitcoin balance

You don't set an amount here. The amount is whatever your spending naturally generates. Buy more, round up more. It scales with a habit you already have instead of asking you to commit to a fixed number.

How the two work together

They're not either-or. Auto-stack gives you a predictable, scheduled amount. Round-ups add on top of whatever you're spending day to day. Someone might run both: a fixed weekly amount from auto-stack, plus whatever round-ups generate from regular card use, all building the same balance without any additional decisions once they're turned on.

Getting started

  • Open the app and go to your bitcoin settings
  • Turn on auto-stack, round-ups, or both
  • Fold+ members buy with zero fees on every purchase, whether it's an auto-stack purchase or a round-up

Common questions

Can I change my auto-stack amount or schedule later?

Yes, both can be adjusted in your bitcoin settings whenever you want.

Do round-ups only apply to purchases made in the Fold app?

Round-ups apply to purchases made with your Fold card.

Can I run auto-stack and round-ups at the same time?

Yes. They work independently and can both be active at once.

Is there a minimum amount for auto-stack?

You set the amount when you turn it on, based on what you're comfortable putting toward bitcoin on that schedule.

Neither feature asks you to change how you spend or how often you think about bitcoin. They attach to habits that already exist, a schedule you already keep, spending you're already doing, and quietly turn that into a bitcoin balance building in the background. The habit's already there. This just puts it to work.
