Fold Reserve, explained: how one balance unlocks better rewards
Why most rewards programs don't reward commitment
Most rewards programs pay you in points or miles. And points and miles have a habit of being worth less by the time you use them. Redemption charts get rewritten. The flight that cost 25,000 points now costs 40,000. Earning rates get trimmed. The status you've worked toward gets harder to reach. The currency belongs to the program, so the rules do too.
Balance-gated programs aren't immune. In May 2026, Bank of America replaced Preferred Rewards with BofA Rewards, and its top credit card bonus, which used to start at a $100,000 balance, now requires $1,000,000. Same balance, smaller reward.
Fold Reserve uses the same basic idea (hold a balance, earn more) but pays you in bitcoin instead of points or miles. There's no redemption chart to rewrite and no point value to quietly shrink.

What is Fold Reserve?
Fold Reserve is a rewards tier system built around one number: your Reserve balance. That balance sets your rewards rate on what you already do on Fold.
Buy Reserve with USD and your tier updates with your balance. No subscription. No token. No staking. No lock-up. You can use your Reserve balance on Fold at any time.
What Reserve unlocks
Starting at Tier 1 ($5,000):
- Bill pay rewards, starting at 0.25% back in bitcoin (bill pay earns nothing without Reserve)
- No Fold fee on the bitcoin exchange, and we don't add our spread on top of BitGo's
- Reserve member rates on gift cards, which vary by brand
Starting at Tier 2 ($15,000):
- Higher rates on your Fold credit card or debit card, up to 5% back in bitcoin on credit and 3% on debit at Tier 6. The 5% rate requires the Fold Bitcoin Credit Card and a $100,000 Fold Reserve balance, and applies to your first $5,000 in eligible purchases each month. Purchases above that earn 1.5%.
- Bill pay rewards that keep climbing, up to 3% at Tier 6 ($100,000) on your first $5,000 in bill payments each month. Bill payments above that earn nothing.
At Tier 1, your credit card and debit card earn the same as they would without Reserve. Card rates climb from Tier 2.
How Fold Reserve tiers work
Reserve has six tiers, from $5,000 to $100,000.
A few things worth knowing:
- Your tier is based on your Reserve balance at the time of each purchase.
- Higher card rates apply to the first $5,000 in card spend each month, on one card: your Fold credit card if you have one, otherwise your Fold debit card. Card spend beyond $5,000 earns the base rate.
- Bill pay rewards apply to the first $5,000 in bill payments each month.
- Monthly limits reset on the 1st.
- Rewards are credited in bitcoin with each purchase and become spendable 30 days after the purchase settles.
See the full rate disclaimer at the end of this post.
What you get at $5,000
At tier 1, you unlock:
- Bill pay rewards. Your bills start earning. Rent, mortgage, utilities, and other bills paid from Fold earn 0.25% back in bitcoin on your first $5,000 in bill payments each month.
- Buying bitcoin costs less. No Fold fee, and we don't add our spread on top of BitGo's.
- Reserve member rates on gift cards, which vary by brand.
If most of your Fold activity is buying bitcoin or paying bills, Tier 1 already pays for itself in attention. If it's card spend, Tier 2 is where the numbers move.
How bill pay rewards work
There's no biller setup inside the Fold app. You take your Fold account and routing number and enter them as the payment account on your biller's own website or app, the same way you'd add any checking account. Bills paid from Fold that way earn bill pay rewards at your tier.
The math at $25,000
Here's what Tier 3 looks like with $5,000 a month on your Fold credit card and $5,000 a month in bills:
- Credit card at 2%: $100 a month in bitcoin
- Bill pay at 1%: $50 a month in bitcoin
- Total: $150 a month, or $1,800 a year
Without Reserve, the same spending earns $75 a month on the card and nothing on bills. Reserve adds $75 a month, or $900 a year, before counting what you save on exchange fees. Dollar figures reflect the USD value of rewards at the time they're earned. Rewards may be worth more or less when you redeem them.
How to buy Reserve and move up a tier
Buy Reserve in the Fold app from a linked account. Reserve purchases are limited to $10,000 per day, so a larger target fills through daily purchases over several days. Your rewards are available the day you commit, you do not have to complete your funding for your rewards rates to activate. If your balance drops below a threshold, your rate adjusts to the matching tier.
What Fold Reserve is not
Fold Reserve is closed-loop stored value issued by Fold, Inc. and redeemable only for Fold products and services. It is not a bank account, deposit account, or savings account, is not redeemable for cash, and is not insured by the FDIC or SIPC. Your Reserve balance earns nothing on its own. See the Fold Terms and Conditions.
Reserve is not staking. There's no token and no lock-up. Your balance sets your tier, and your tier sets your rates.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum balance for Fold Reserve?
5,000, which is Tier1. Tier 1 unlocks bill pay rewards, no Fold fee on the bitcoin exchange, and Reserve member rates on gift cards. Credit card and debit card rates start climbing a tTier 2 (15,000).
What is the highest reward rate on Fold Reserve? At Tier 6 ($100,000), Reserve pays 5% back in bitcoin on credit card spend or 3% on debit card spend, plus 3% on bill pay. These rates apply to the first $5,000 in card spend and the first $5,000 in bill payments each month. Card spend above that earns the base rate (1.5% credit, 0.25% debit), and bill payments above that earn nothing. The 5% rate requires the Fold Bitcoin Credit Card.
Do I earn the higher rate on both my credit card and debit card? No. The higher card rate applies to one card: your Fold credit card if you have one, otherwise your Fold debit card.
Does Fold Reserve require staking a token? No. Reserve is bought with USD. There's no proprietary token, no staking, and no lock-up.
Are Fold Reserve rewards paid in bitcoin? Yes. Rewards are paid in bitcoin and pend for 30 days before they are credited.
Can my tier change? Yes. Your tier is based on your Reserve balance at the time of each purchase. If your balance drops below a threshold, your rate adjusts to the matching tier.
Is there a fee to join Fold Reserve? No. There's no subscription fee to hold a Reserve balance.
Disclosures: Rewards are earned on your eligible spend, not on your balance. The Fold Bitcoin Credit Card earns a 1.50% base rate on all eligible purchases with no cap and no Reserve balance required. The Fold Prepaid Debit Card (issued by Sutton Bank) earns a 0.25% base rate on all eligible purchases with no cap and no Reserve balance required. A Reserve balance of $5,000 or more is required to earn on eligible ACH bill pay, which earns 0.25%. Your rate increases above these base rates as your Reserve balance grows, starting at $15,000. Any amount above the base rate applies only to the first $5,000 of eligible spend each calendar month, counted separately for card spend and for bill pay. Card spend above that cap earns the base rate and bill pay earns nothing above it. Maximum rates at a $100,000 Reserve balance are 5.00% on the Fold Bitcoin Credit Card, 3.00% on the Fold Prepaid Debit Card, and 3.00% on bill pay. You earn a boost on only one card: if you hold the Fold Bitcoin Credit Card, the boost applies to that card and your debit card earns the base rate. Bill pay is unaffected by which card you hold. Rates are subject to change. See the Fold Terms and Conditions for details and tier requirements.
1.5% back in bitcoin on eligible purchases, with no cap. Rewards are earned on your eligible spend, not on your balance. Holding a Fold Reserve balance can boost your rate on your first $5,000 in eligible purchases each calendar month. Eligible purchases above that amount, and all eligible purchases if you do not hold a qualifying Reserve balance, earn the 1.5% base rate. Credit card and debit card rewards cannot be earned at the same time. Rewards are provided by Fold, not Celtic Bank. Rates are subject to change. See the Cardholder Agreement and our Terms and Conditions. The Fold Bitcoin Credit Card™ is issued by Celtic Bank, pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc.
The Fold Prepaid Debit Card earns a 0.25% base rate in bitcoin on eligible purchases, with no cap, whatever your Reserve balance and whichever cards you hold. A Fold Reserve balance of $15,000 or more adds a boost above the base rate on your first $5,000 in eligible purchases each calendar month. You earn a boost on only one card at a time: if you hold the Fold Bitcoin Credit Card, the boost applies to that card and your debit card earns the base rate only. A purchase earns rewards when it runs as a credit transaction. If you choose debit and enter your PIN at checkout, the purchase runs over a PIN debit network and does not earn rewards. To earn at an in-store terminal, choose credit instead of debit. Final routing can depend on the merchant, and online purchases route automatically, so rewards are determined by how your transaction is processed. Rates are subject to change. See the Fold Terms and Conditions for details, including Reserve tier requirements.
Fold Reserve member benefits require a Reserve balance of $5,000 or more and are subject to change. Fold charges no trading fee and adds no spread of its own on bitcoin buys and sells. A market spread charged by Fold's execution partner is included in the price you see and may vary. Fold charges no bitcoin withdrawal fee and pays the bitcoin network fee on your on-chain withdrawals, up to any limits shown in the Fold App. Reserve members also pay no ATM withdrawal fee and no international transaction fee on the Fold Prepaid Debit Card, issued by Sutton Bank. Fold Reserve member rates on gift cards vary by brand and are shown in the Fold App. See the Fold Reserve Member Benefits section of the Fold Terms and Conditions for details.
Reserve purchases are limited to $10,000 per day. A Funding Target above that amount is funded through daily purchases over several days. Your reward tier can be set by a target you have not finished funding. If those scheduled purchases are cancelled, fail, or are returned, rewards earned at the higher tier are repriced to the tier your funded balance supports and the difference is reversed. Redeeming Reserve reduces your balance, which can lower your tier or drop you below the $5,000 minimum, and your tier does not recover until you purchase more Reserve. Refunds are discretionary except where required by law, are returned only to your original funding source, and a refunded Reserve Unit is cancelled rather than restored. See the Fold Reserve section of the Fold Terms and Conditions for details.
Gift cards sold through Fold are issued by the brands that offer them and are governed by each brand's own terms, including redemption rules, expiration, and restrictions. Fold is not responsible for a brand's failure to honor or accept a gift card. Gift cards are for personal use and may not be resold. Purchases through the Fold App are limited to $2,000 per gift card and $10,000 per day. Reward rates vary by brand and change. Current rates are shown in the Shop tab.
Rewards are paid in bitcoin and are unsecured promotional obligations of Fold, Inc. They are not deposits, are not FDIC or SIPC insured, are not paid by any bank, and may lose value. Rewards are earned on eligible spend, not on any balance you hold. Rewards pend for 30 days before they are credited, and are reversed in proportion to any purchase that is returned, refunded, disputed, or reversed. Your Rewards Account is limited to $10,000, and you must withdraw below that limit to keep earning. Rewards can be redeemed once your balance reaches 30,000 sats. If your Fold account becomes inactive, Fold may reduce your Rewards Account balance by 0.01 BTC per month and may close the account and forfeit the balance. Rewards may be worth more or less at redemption than when earned. Bonus categories, earning rates, tier requirements, and offer availability are subject to change and may be capped or limited in duration. See the Fold Terms and Conditions for earning exclusions and full details.
