Getting back to what we do best
Getting back to what we do best
We started Fold with a simple idea: your money should help you get ahead without asking you to put your life on hold.
You still have to buy groceries, pay your mortgage, raise a family, hone your craft and live your life. We think the money you use for those things should help you build for the future too.
Over the years, we built a lot around that idea. Gift cards. Bitcoin trading. Bill pay. A debit card. A credit card. Each made Fold more useful, but the connection between them became less clear. Buying bitcoin unlocked one set of rewards. A subscription unlocked another. The free version had no debit rewards at all. People liked parts of Fold but couldn't reach all of it.
So we simplified it. There is now one free Fold for everyone, with no subscription and no fee: 1.5% back in bitcoin on every Fold Credit Card purchase, 0.25% on every debit purchase, no cap and no balance required, and bitcoin trading at competitive rates.
And now there is another way to raise your rewards across the whole platform: Reserve.
We want Fold to be the most rewarding money platform: dollars for today, bitcoin for tomorrow.
How Reserve works
Reserve is a dollar balance you keep on Fold for the money you've already decided to put through Fold: the next few months of bills, your next bitcoin buys, the gift cards and purchases you'd make here anyway. For some people that's $5,000. For others it's $100,000. Either way, it's money with somewhere to go, not money you're setting aside for years.
You can use it for anything you already do here: buy bitcoin, shop at our partner merchants or push to your checking account to pay bills, pay off your credit card or fund your debit card. Your balance also sets your rewards across Fold.
Boosted rates apply to your first $5,000 of card purchases and $5,000 of bill payments each month, so $10,000 in spend total. Zero fees + zero added spread is unlimited and applies to all types of bitcoin buys spot, recurring, round up, paycheck.
For a limited time, every Reserve balance also earns a 3% bonus** in bitcoin, at every tier. It's paid out over three years, so a $5,000 balance earns $150 in bitcoin on top of your rewards, a $100,000 balance earns $3,000.
Your Reserve balance isn't locked. Keep it ready for your life, and while it's there, it makes everything you do on Fold more rewarding.
Rewarding the things that matter
Most reward programs are built around travel, restaurants and shopping. We wanted to reward the expenses that take up much more of people's lives.
Groceries. Rent. Mortgages. Utilities. Childcare.
With Reserve, you can earn up to 5%* on credit card purchases and 3% on debit and bill payments. You don't need to spend more or change how you live. Pay the bills you already have and buy the things you already need. Fold makes more of that spending work for you.
*The 5% rate requires the Fold Bitcoin Credit Card and a $100,000 Fold Reserve balance, and applies to your first $5,000 in eligible purchases each month.
Reserve is the only rewards program that pays you on your biggest bills. Take the account and routing number in the app, point your mortgage, rent, utilities, taxes and the rest at it, and every one of those payments earns bitcoin. Rewards used to be for the extras, dining and travel. Now they're for the essentials: housing, healthcare, and everything that keeps a household running.
* The 5% rate requires the Fold Bitcoin Credit Card and a $100,000 Fold Reserve balance, and applies to your first $5,000 in eligible purchases each month. Purchases above that earn 1.5%. The 3% debit and bill pay rates also require a $100,000 Reserve balance and apply to your first $5,000 in debit purchases and your first $5,000 in bill payments each month. Debit earns 3% only if you don't hold the credit card.
You don't have to choose between living now and saving for later.
Dollars and bitcoin should work like money
For years, bitcoin companies have advertised zero-fee trading while still making money through the spread. We wanted zero to mean zero.
With Reserve, Fold charges zero trading fees and adds zero additional spread on bitcoin buys and sells. And sending your bitcoin? Also free.
This is what the industry has talked about for years, and Fold is the first to actually deliver it. Dollars can become bitcoin without Fold taking a cut, bitcoin can become dollars the same way, and you can send your bitcoin without a network fee.
Bitcoin is money. Moving between it and dollars should work that way.
A new kind of account
Reserve is a brand new type of financial account. It isn't a checking account and it isn't a savings account. Instead of paying interest on the balance, it pays you in boosted rewards on everything you do with your money: your card spend, your bills, your bitcoin trading and more. It's built for the money you're about to use, and for most people it can out-reward both.
A 3.5% savings account sounds good until you look at what you keep. At a 24% federal marginal tax rate, 3.5% becomes about 2.66% after federal income tax, and less again after state tax. If your actual cost of living is rising 6%, you're losing purchasing power while the balance sits there. On $5,000, that's about $120 kept after tax against roughly $300 of buying power gone.
Reserve takes a different route. Your balance unlocks rewards on spending you already have, and the return depends on how much of your life you run through Fold, not on a rate someone else sets. Take the same $5,000, held at Tier 1 and used the way Reserve is meant to be used: $5,000 a month in bill pay earns 0.25%, or $150 a year, and $5,000 a month in bitcoin buys at zero fees and zero added spread saves roughly 1% against buying it anywhere else, or about $600 a year. On top of that, for a limited time, every Reserve balance earns a 3% bitcoin bonus, paid out over three years, which adds another $50 a year on $5,000. That's around $800 back on a $5,000 balance, about 16%, paid in bitcoin, before you count a single card purchase. The same balance in a savings account keeps you about $120 and doesn't cover inflation.
Purchase rewards are generally treated as rebates rather than taxable income for federal tax purposes, unlike savings interest. A spending reward isn't the same as a savings yield, and we're not going to pretend it is. But the idea is simple: the money you're about to use should be doing something for you while it waits.
Because it's a different kind of account, it works differently. There's no interest; the return comes from your activity, and it isn't FDIC insured. Your paycheck and your bill money belong in your Fold Cash Account, which is FDIC insured through our bank partner and takes direct deposit; Reserve sits next to it, holding the dollars you've already pointed at Fold. The dollars behind Reserve are held at Lead Bank and in U.S. Treasuries and money market funds, fully reserved and never lent out. Your bitcoin is held at BitGo, a federally chartered custodian. We'd rather say exactly where your money sits than ask you to take it on faith.
Your numbers won't be our numbers. Run your own balance, bills and bitcoin buys through the Reserve calculator and see what a savings account would have to pay to keep up.
An interest-bearing cash option is on our roadmap. Reserve isn't that, and it isn't trying to be.
Back to Fold
Reserve brings us back to why we built Fold.
Your money should reward you for living today and help you build a stronger foundation for tomorrow. Pay your bills. Buy groceries. Use your card. Move freely between dollars and bitcoin. Earn more from the financial life you already have.
If you were a Fold+ member, Reserve is yours free through November 1. Try it on your own money and decide for yourself. If it isn't for you, the free Fold is still the best version of Fold we've ever offered, and it isn't going anywhere. Reserve is open to everyone now.
That's the Fold we're building: the most rewarding money platform.
Dollars for today. Bitcoin for tomorrow.
Disclosures
Fold Reserve is closed-loop stored value issued by Fold, Inc. and redeemable only for Fold products and services. It is not a bank account, deposit account, or savings account, is not redeemable for cash, and is not insured by the FDIC or SIPC. Your Reserve balance earns nothing on its own. See the Fold Terms and Conditions.
Rewards are earned on your eligible spend, not on your balance. The Fold Bitcoin Credit Card earns a 1.50% base rate on all eligible purchases with no cap and no Reserve balance required. The Fold Prepaid Debit Card (issued by Sutton Bank) earns a 0.25% base rate on all eligible purchases with no cap and no Reserve balance required. A Reserve balance of $5,000 or more is required to earn on eligible ACH bill pay, which earns 0.25%. Your rate increases above these base rates as your Reserve balance grows, starting at $15,000. Any amount above the base rate applies only to the first $5,000 of eligible spend each calendar month, counted separately for card spend and for bill pay. Card spend above that cap earns the base rate and bill pay earns nothing above it. Maximum rates at a $100,000 Reserve balance are 5.00% on the Fold Bitcoin Credit Card, 3.00% on the Fold Prepaid Debit Card, and 3.00% on bill pay. You earn a boost on only one card: if you hold the Fold Bitcoin Credit Card, the boost applies to that card and your debit card earns the base rate. Bill pay is unaffected by which card you hold. Rates are subject to change. See the Fold Terms and Conditions for details and tier requirements.
1.5% back in bitcoin on eligible purchases, with no cap. Rewards are earned on your eligible spend, not on your balance. Holding a Fold Reserve balance can boost your rate on your first $5,000 in eligible purchases each calendar month. Eligible purchases above that amount, and all eligible purchases if you do not hold a qualifying Reserve balance, earn the 1.5% base rate. You earn a boost on only one card at a time. Rewards are provided by Fold, not Celtic Bank. Rates are subject to change. See the Cardholder Agreement and our Terms and Conditions. The Fold Bitcoin Credit Card™ is issued by Celtic Bank, pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc.
The Fold Prepaid Debit Card earns a 0.25% base rate in bitcoin on eligible purchases, with no cap, whatever your Reserve balance and whichever cards you hold. A Fold Reserve balance of $15,000 or more adds a boost above the base rate on your first $5,000 in eligible purchases each calendar month. You earn a boost on only one card at a time: if you hold the Fold Bitcoin Credit Card, the boost applies to that card and your debit card earns the base rate only. A purchase earns rewards when it runs as a credit transaction. If you choose debit and enter your PIN at checkout, the purchase runs over a PIN debit network and does not earn rewards. To earn at an in-store terminal, choose credit instead of debit. Final routing can depend on the merchant, and online purchases route automatically, so rewards are determined by how your transaction is processed. Rates are subject to change. See the Fold Terms and Conditions for details, including Reserve tier requirements.
Fold Reserve member benefits require a Reserve balance of $5,000 or more and are subject to change. Fold charges no trading fee and adds no spread of its own on bitcoin buys and sells. A market spread charged by Fold’s execution partner is included in the price you see and may vary. Fold charges no bitcoin withdrawal fee and pays the bitcoin network fee on your on-chain withdrawals, up to any limits shown in the Fold App. Reserve members also pay no ATM withdrawal fee and no international transaction fee on the Fold Prepaid Debit Card, issued by Sutton Bank. Fold Reserve member rates on gift cards vary by brand and are shown in the Fold App. See the Fold Reserve Member Benefits section of the Fold Terms and Conditions for details.
Without a Fold Reserve balance of $5,000 or more, a 1% transaction fee applies to bitcoin buys and sells, including automated buys, and the price you see includes a Fold spread plus a spread charged by Fold’s execution partner, which may vary. The fee is shown before you confirm. Bitcoin withdrawals incur a network fee charged by third parties, not by Fold. Fee-free trading and fee-free withdrawals are Fold Reserve member benefits and require a Fold Reserve balance of $5,000 or more.
**The Fold Reserve Bonus is a limited time offer for new Fold Reserve members. Purchase at least $5,000 of Fold Reserve during the enrollment window and Fold applies 3% once to that amount, up to $100,000, and pays it in three annual installments. The 3% is not an annual rate, is not interest, and is not a yield on your balance. Your bonus is fixed when the enrollment window closes and later purchases do not increase it. If your redemptions after that date ever exceed your purchases after that date, the amount your bonus is based on is permanently reduced by the largest shortfall you reach, and buying more Fold Reserve does not restore it. If that amount falls below $5,000 the offer ends and unpaid installments are forfeited, and the same happens if your Fold account closes. Installments are paid in bitcoin to your rewards balance at the market rate on the payment date, so the dollar value you receive may be more or less than 3%. See the Fold Reserve Bonus Promotional Terms for full details.
Reserve purchases are limited to $10,000 per day. A Funding Target above that amount is funded through daily purchases over several days. Your reward tier can be set by a target you have not finished funding. If those scheduled purchases are cancelled, fail, or are returned, rewards earned at the higher tier are repriced to the tier your funded balance supports and the difference is reversed. Redeeming Reserve reduces your balance, which can lower your tier or drop you below the $5,000 minimum, and your tier does not recover until you purchase more Reserve. Refunds are discretionary except where required by law, are returned only to your original funding source, and a refunded Reserve Unit is cancelled rather than restored. See the Fold Reserve section of the Fold Terms and Conditions for details.
Your promotional Reserve tier is granted by Fold for the period stated and works like a funded balance for reward rates and member benefits during that period. It is not stored value, has no cash value, and cannot be redeemed, transferred, or refunded. When it ends, your tier is set by the Reserve balance you have funded, and if that balance is below $5,000, standard fees and base rates apply from your next transaction. See the Promotional Tiers section of the Fold Terms and Conditions.
Fold is a financial technology company and is not a bank. Banking services are provided by Lead Bank, Member FDIC. Funds held in your Fold Spending Account are eligible for FDIC insurance on a pass-through basis up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured institution, for each ownership category. Certain conditions must be satisfied for pass-through coverage to apply. See the FDIC Deposit Insurance section of the Fold Spending Account Agreement for details.
The Fold Spending Account does not earn interest. No interest rate or annual percentage yield applies. Bitcoin rewards are promotional rewards paid by Fold. They are not interest, are not a yield, and are not paid by Lead Bank or on your account balance. Rewards are earned on qualifying transactions, not for opening the account, for keeping it open, or for holding or increasing a balance.
Gift cards sold through Fold are issued by the brands that offer them and are governed by each brand’s own terms, including redemption rules, expiration, and restrictions. Fold is not responsible for a brand’s failure to honor or accept a gift card. Gift cards are for personal use and may not be resold. Purchases through the Fold App are limited to $2,000 per gift card and $10,000 per day. Reward rates vary by brand and change. Current rates are shown in the Shop tab.
Rewards are paid in bitcoin and are unsecured promotional obligations of Fold, Inc. They are not deposits, are not FDIC or SIPC insured, are not paid by any bank, and may lose value. Rewards are earned on eligible spend, not on any balance you hold. Rewards pend for 30 days before they are credited, and are reversed in proportion to any purchase that is returned, refunded, disputed, or reversed. Your Rewards Account is limited to $10,000, and you must withdraw below that limit to keep earning. Rewards can be redeemed once your balance reaches 30,000 sats. If your Fold account becomes inactive, Fold may reduce your Rewards Account balance by 0.01 BTC per month and may close the account and forfeit the balance. Rewards may be worth more or less at redemption than when earned. Bonus categories, earning rates, tier requirements, and offer availability are subject to change and may be capped or limited in duration. See the Fold Terms and Conditions for earning exclusions and full details.
